Brunch in Shoreditch: where to go this weekend

The best brunch in Shoreditch is a Bacon Naan Roll at Dishoom on Boundary Street, served from 8am on weekdays and 9am at weekends, for £11.70. If you want a proper fry-up, E Pellicci on Bethnal Green Road has been doing breakfast since 1900, Monday to Saturday from 8am. If you want a tablecloth, Cecconi's on Redchurch Street opens at 7.30am every day with a breakfast and a brunch menu. This weekend, here is where to go and what time to get there.

Dishoom, Boundary Street

Dishoom at 7 Boundary Street, E2, cooks Bombay cafe food all day, but breakfast is its best hour. Breakfast runs from 8am to 11.45am on weekdays and from 9am to 11.45am at weekends. The Bacon Naan Roll is £11.70, or £13.90 with twice the bacon; the sausage version is £12.50. The Kejriwal, two fried eggs on chilli cheese toast, is £12.90, and the Chole Puri Halwa, a chickpea and puri plate that the kitchen calls the chef's favourite, is £15.90. A 12.5% service charge is optional. The Shoreditch cafe opens every day of the week, so it is the safe Sunday answer too.

E Pellicci, Bethnal Green Road

Further east along Bethnal Green Road, in Bethnal Green proper, E Pellicci at 332 Bethnal Green Road, E2, is a family-run cafe that has served the area since 1900, with its original tiles still on the walls. The menu is Italian and British: proper breakfasts, strong coffee and, in its own words, even stronger opinions. It opens Monday to Saturday, 8am to 3pm, and is closed on Sunday, so plan a Saturday rather than a Sunday. The next cocktail night is Thursday 5 November.

Cecconi's, Redchurch Street

Cecconi's Shoreditch at 58-60 Redchurch Street, E2, is the dressier option. It opens at 7.30am every day, with separate breakfast and brunch menus before the Northern Italian lunch takes over: homemade pasta, cicchetti and wood-fired pizza. It is right on the street with the best shops in Shoreditch, so it is the obvious stop before or after a Redchurch Street wander.

Leila's Shop, Calvert Avenue

On Calvert Avenue, the street that runs into Arnold Circus, Leila's Shop at 15-17 Calvert Avenue, E2, is a shop that also serves lunch, two minutes from Rochelle Canteen and handy for the same morning. The shop opens at 10am on Saturday and lunch is served Wednesday to Saturday from noon to 3pm. It is small and it does not open on Sunday or Monday, which is part of its charm.

Rochelle Canteen, Arnold Circus

For a late, long weekend lunch rather than an early brunch, Rochelle Canteen in its walled garden at 16 Playground Gardens serves lunch seven days a week from noon to 2.45pm. It has been there since 2004. Book a garden table if the weather is with you.

Sunday: roast instead

If brunch has slid into the afternoon, Hawksmoor Spitalfields at 157a Commercial Street opens at 11.30am on Sunday and does a Sunday roast. St John Bread and Wine at 94-96 Commercial Street serves lunch every day from noon, with a daily menu posted online at 11am.

Bottomless brunch

If you want the boozy version, Boxpark Shoreditch at 2-10 Bethnal Green Road runs a bottomless brunch alongside its street food traders and live sport screenings. It opens at 11am every day.

Booking and queues

Dishoom takes table bookings and group bookings through its site, and its bacon comes from Ramsay of Carluke, its sausages from Maynard's Farm and its eggs from St Ewe, if you like to know. Cecconi's takes bookings online. Rochelle Canteen is wheelchair accessible, and the garden tables are the ones to ask for. E Pellicci is small, and the trick there is simply to arrive early on a Saturday. None of these is a place where you will be hurried, which is the whole point of brunch.

Timing it

  • Saturday before 10am: Pellicci or Dishoom, then the shops on Redchurch Street.
  • Sunday: Dishoom at 9am, then Columbia Road Flower Market. Pellicci and Leila's are both shut.
  • Weekday: Cecconi's from 7.30am is the breakfast meeting option.
  • Late riser: Rochelle Canteen or St John Bread and Wine from noon.
