The best wine bar in Shoreditch is Sager + Wilde on Hackney Road, E2, a refurbished old pub with a list printed every day and plenty open by the glass. It opens at 5pm on weekdays and 2pm at weekends, and stays open until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. After that: Oranj, the natural wine bar that moved round the corner to Dray Walk last year; Vagabond at Principal Place for self-pour; Funky Cellar inside Spitalfields Market for cheese and orange wine in the daytime; and Brawn on Columbia Road if you want dinner with your bottle.

Sager + Wilde, Hackney Road

Sager + Wilde at 193 Hackney Road is the wine bar other wine bars round here get measured against. The room is a stripped-back bar in a refurbished historic pub, and the list is printed daily, with plenty of choice by the glass, so it rewards going back. Hours are 5pm to 11pm Monday to Thursday, 5pm to 1am on Friday, 2pm to 1am on Saturday and 2pm to 11pm on Sunday. The weekend 2pm start makes it a good Saturday afternoon.

Oranj, Dray Walk

Oranj spent its early years on Bacon Street before moving on 16 July 2025 to Dray Walk, next to Rough Trade, off Brick Lane, E1. The move brought a terrace, two private rooms, an outdoor kitchen and a permanent head chef, while the chef residencies and DJ nights carried on. The wine is natural and the tables communal. It also runs a bottle shop and subscription online, with bottles from £12, so you can take the one you liked home. Book through its website.

Vagabond, Principal Place

Vagabond Shoreditch is in The Pavilion at 4 Principal Place on Worship Street, EC2A. It is a chain, now part of the Majestic family, but it earns its place for the format: self-pour machines with 25ml tasters, so you can try a dozen wines without committing to one. There are more than 100 wines and draught beers to pour, cheese, charcuterie and small plates all day, and a heated roof terrace with blankets for colder nights. It is the obvious after-work wine stop for anyone working near Liverpool Street.

Funky Cellar, Lamb Street

Funky Cellar at 10a Lamb Street, E1, inside Old Spitalfields Market, is a wine bar, deli and cheese shop in a 1970s-style room. In November it is hard to argue with: fondue, raclette, hot Camembert and cheese boards, with a cellar that leans towards Bordeaux reds and orange wine, plus UK craft beer. It opens at 10am every day, until 10pm Monday to Saturday and 7pm on Sundays, so it works at lunchtime as well as after work.

Brawn, Columbia Road

Brawn is a neighbourhood restaurant on Columbia Road, E2, with its own wine list alongside the food menu. It serves lunch Tuesday to Saturday from noon and dinner Monday to Saturday from 6pm. Treat it as dinner with good wine rather than a bar, and book.

Wine with a view

Two rooftops take wine seriously enough to mention. Boundary on Redchurch Street publishes a separate rooftop wine list and keeps its glass orangery open Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 11pm, which makes it the warm option in November. Vagabond's heated terrace at Principal Place is the other, with blankets on the chairs.

Taking a bottle home

Two of these are shops as well as bars. Oranj sells its natural wines online by colour, country and price, from around £12 a bottle up to £60 and above, and runs a monthly subscription. Funky Cellar has a deli counter of mainly French cheeses and imported products to go with whatever you buy. Buying from the bar you have just drunk in is the simplest way to find a wine you will actually want again.

How to plan it

  • Saturday afternoon: Sager + Wilde opens at 2pm.
  • Lunchtime: Funky Cellar, from 10am, inside Spitalfields Market.
  • After work near Liverpool Street: Vagabond, Principal Place.
  • Dinner with natural wine: Oranj on Dray Walk, or Brawn on Columbia Road.

A note on closures: Passione Vino's Leonard Street bar, which turns up on many older lists, says on its own website that it is currently closed. Check before you go.
