Short version: go to Tavern for a proper dinner, book The Clove Club if it is a big occasion, and head to Cây Tre for a weekday lunch that costs under £20. All three are on Old Street, EC1V.

Tavern, 374 Old Street: the one for dinner

Tavern sits on the stretch of Old Street between Great Eastern Street and Shoreditch High Street, next door to The Clove Club, in the former Nest site. It opened on 28 April 2026 from the team behind Nest and the Michelin-starred Restaurant St Barts. The idea is a British bistro with a pub streak: nose-to-tail cooking, fire, an open kitchen.

The room is the draw before the food arrives. Time Out describes a warren-like dining room with high ceilings and original Victorian floor tiles. Restaurant Online likens it to Quality Chop House meets St John.

What to order:

  • The Chunion Puff with stout gel, which The Infatuation singles out as a snack highlight.
  • The saddleback pork main, another Infatuation pick.
  • Puffed pig skin with smoked cod’s roe, per Time Out, or the foot-long pork scratchings, per Hot Dinners.
  • Chips, and the pork sausage with cuttlefish stuffing.

Drinks lean towards low-intervention wine, cider and beer, plus martinis including a pickleback martini and a pickle chilli martini. Time Out rates the dessert mixed: the strawberry sorbet is good, the mini brown butter cakes were tough.

Opinions differ. Time Out gives it 3 out of 5, while The Handbook is far keener. OpenTable lists a typical spend of £26 to £40.

When: lunch Wednesday to Saturday, 12pm to 2pm. Dinner Tuesday to Saturday, with the bar open until 11pm. The restaurant’s own site gives a 5pm dinner start, OpenTable shows 5.30pm, so book the slot you are shown. Reserve through the Tavern website.

The Clove Club, Shoreditch Town Hall, 380 Old Street: the big night

The Clove Club is in Shoreditch Town Hall, a Grade II-listed building, and has held two Michelin stars. It opened in 2013 after starting as a supper club in 2010, and Isaac McHale is chef-patron. It was ranked 86th on the 2025 World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

What to order: there is nothing to choose, as it is a set tasting menu, with a vegetarian version that includes Hazelwood Grilled Maitake. Casual dress is fine, and OpenTable says the room is especially lovely at lunch.

What it costs: prices reported by Restaurant Online in April 2026:

  • Dinner tasting menu: £285 on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
  • The same menu at £185 on Tuesday and Wednesday, a midweek reduction. OpenTable shows that price running to 25 November 2026, so check when you book.
  • Lunch, Wednesday to Saturday: three courses for £95, or the tasting menu for £185.

When: lunch Wednesday to Saturday, last seating 1.30pm. Dinner Monday to Saturday, last seating 8.30pm. Online booking opens up to three months ahead for one to six guests, with card details required but no deposit, and changes inside 72 hours can be charged. Book at thecloveclub.com.

Cây Tre, 301 Old Street: the weekday lunch

Cây Tre is Vietnamese and sits at the Old Street end of the Kingsland Road phở strip. Time Out ranks it 38th in its list of the 50 best restaurants in London, in the cheaper price bracket.

What to order: the Monday to Friday set lunch is £18.95 for two courses. Time Out suggests summer rolls, then a phở. It is the best value of the three by a distance, and the easiest to fit into a working day around Old Street.

Details on Time Out’s London list.

How to choose

  • Under £20, weekday: Cây Tre.
  • A proper dinner without a tasting menu: Tavern.
  • An occasion: The Clove Club, ideally at lunch or midweek.

Tavern and The Clove Club share a pavement, so if one is full, try the other. Nearest stations are Old Street, Shoreditch High Street on the Overground, and Hoxton for the Town Hall end.
